Of all the jobs you could have on campus, what made you want to be a Peer Mentor?
The reason I wanted to be a peer mentor is because I want to be able to give first-year students the opportunity to learn things about college that they may have questions about or had no idea existed. Another reason is to be able to give students the chance to have someone to talk to if they need someone.
If you could learn any skill or craft instantly, what would it be?
I really want to learn how to crotchet because I think it's such an intricate craft and the ability to make the people I love handmade crafts and even my own plushies is something that I enjoy. Another skill that I would want to learn is book binding because I really enjoy reading and being able to rebind and create my own cover of some of my favorite books is amazing.
What's one thing on your bucket list you know you'll cross off some day?
One thing that I would like to mark off my bucket list is a road trip around the U.S. My family would do road trips when we wanted to do a summer vacation and so I have really grown to love them even when it feels super boring. Also getting a souvenir from each state would be apart of that bucket list option.
What's your favorite way to de-stress or relax during busy times?
One of my favorite ways to de-stress is probably got to be getting in my car and just singing my heart out to whatever I've got playing from my Spotify playlist. Just getting that moment to scream, cry, or get emotional in general is pretty relaxing for me.
If your life had a soundtrack, what is your theme song?
If my life had a soundtrack, I think that it would be the most musically diverse soundtrack ever. One song that stands out though is probably got to be "I Will Survive" by Gloria Gaynor. It's a really motivating song that I think has got some themes to it that I can relate to.
You just won an all-expenses paid vacation. Where would you go?
I would for sure go to Japan because it's somewhere I've always wanted to go and experience. I would for sure want to go during the cherry blossom season. Those trees are just so beautiful so being able to see them in person would be amazing.
What's your favorite place on campus‚ and why?
I think my favorite place is either the library or the Union, it just depends on how I am feeling that day. If I need some quiet time and get stuff done for sure the library. But if I just want to chill or be surrounded by people just sitting at the Union can be really nice. Especially outside when it's nice, getting a chance to chill in the hammocks is really nice.
What's your go-to comfort food or guilty pleasure snack?
My go-to comfort food is definitely Maruchan ramen with Valentina. There is nothing better than eating some packaged ramen with hot sauce on a cold day. For me, I'll just eat it whenever but it's something that without a fault makes me feel warm inside.
What's one thing you wish you had known before starting college?
One thing I wish I had known before starting college is to make sure to reach out if you need help or are struggling with something. Before I started college I thought that everything would be fine and I would never need to reach out to anyone so why think about it. I think making sure you're educated on what kind of help you can get from the campus or even just fellow peers is really important and something I wish I had known.
Why I Mentor Statement
I mentor because I believe that everyone deserves a shoulder to lean on. I want to be the kind of mentor who helps students navigate a new and challenging first year. My experiences with being a first gen student have taught me how to use resources around and I hope to use that to support students as they navigate this new era in their life.
