Position Description

CAST POWER programs (First Husker, Emerging Leaders, and Transfer) are designed to help first-year students build community, connect to campus resources, and learn the skills and strategies they need to achieve academic success. The role of Peer Mentors is to help the new class of incoming Huskers transition to college life by making connections, offering support, and serving as role models. These programs begin with a “4-day” foundational event Sunday, August 18 through Thursday, August 22, 2024, and extend into the Fall semester through seminar courses taught by CAST staff and Peer Mentor teams. Transfer Peer Mentors do not have to have been a part of a previous CAST POWER program; interested applications just need to have been a transfer student to UNL and have an interest in enriching incoming students’ lives.

Compensation

  • $12.00 per hour (4-6 hours on average per week during the fall semester)
  • Early move-in expenses paid for Peer Mentors living on-campus during August training/foundational event

Minimum Qualifications

  • Currently enrolled fulltime at UNL
  • Participated in either the First Husker or CAST POWER/Emerging Leaders seminar; if applying to be a Transfer Peer Mentor, no prior experience or participation is necessary
  • Cumulative 2.5 GPA or higher
  • Must maintain full-time status
  • Experience working with others in a leadership/mentoring role preferred

Responsibilities

  • Must be available for all training, professional development, and program dates (see detailed list below)
  • Attend and co-facilitate weekly seminar course
  • Regularly communicate with 20-25 first-year students
  • Lead small group activities and discussions
  • Be willing to share your experiences as a peer mentor in a variety of forums
  • Schedule and facilitate required one-on-one meetings with your assigned students
  • Attend weekly meetings with your CAST staff partner
  • Abide by University of Nebraska–Lincoln policies and procedures

Mandatory Training/Program Dates

  • Peer Mentor Spring Kickoff: Monday, March 25, 2024 @ 5:00 – 7:00 PM
  • Peer Mentor Training: Monday, August 12 – Friday, August 16
  • CAST “4-Day” Foundational Program: Sunday, August 18 – Thursday, August 22
  • CAST staff partner meetings: 30 minutes per week during the Fall 2024 semester, TBD
  • Professional Development Trainings: Mondays, 3:00 – 5:00 PM

    • November 18
